Phrasal Verbs(片語) 9 - Going Out

今次是Janice 和 Pamela 兩個人在討論被男生約會的事情。這些經驗,筆者就沒有試過了,因為小弟是一名男人呢…
Janice : It’s a good job I was in when Alex phoned.
Pamela : Why?
Janice : He’s invited me out to dinner. He’s picking me up in fifteen minutes. What shall I Wear? Do you think I’ve got time to do my hair? Look, it’s ten past already.

Pamela : Well, slow down or you won’t be able to do anything.

P.S 對小弟來說,約會時不會太希望女生太花枝招展,重要是乾淨、整理和對自己的尊重。適當的化妝打扮可以是表達尊重的其中一種方法,但太過浮誇的話很有可能客怕男生 :)

For Crying It Loud後...

You kids cool it and stop fighting right now! Not one single day goes by without fighting between the two of you. Can't you be more friendly to each other like Mike and Linda next door?

這位爸爸説:你們不許再打了,馬上給我停下來。沒有一天你們不打架的。你們能不能也像隔壁的Mike和Linda那樣友善點呢?
或者來個妻子發脾氣,老公勸說的例子吧。鄰居把她新買的汽車撞壞,她怒不可遏之時,於是當老公的對她説:

Cool it, honey! I've checked the car -- it's not as serious as you thought. Besides, their insurance company is going to pay for the repair.

這位丈夫説:“別發火,親愛的。我去檢查過那車了,情況並不像你想像的那麼嚴重。而且,他們的保險公司會負擔修理費的。

For crying out loud!!

Cry 解作哭泣或狂呼,相信不用多說。不過,Cry 也可組成不同的俗語,今天我們就和大家介紹Crying it Loud的用法:

For crying out loud :是不耐煩地、或者是厭煩地表示驚訝。我們要舉的例子是一個怒氣沖衝的爸爸在跟他兒子説話:
例(1):For crying out loud, son! When are you going to do what I've told you and clean up your room! I just looked in there again and it's so messy I had to look twice to make sure your bed was still there under all that junk.

2: For crying out loud! Jack took my tennis racket again. How many times have I told him I don't mind letting him use it, but he at least has to ask first in case I need it myself!

其實上述兩句均是來自英文當中:「You are not my cup of tea」,是用來拒絕追求者的。不過,翻譯到中文之後,有不少人除了用來拒絕追求者外,還於其他自己不感意慾嘗試的,都用上「這杯茶」。既然懂得在中文當中使用,那麼在日常英文溝通理論上也用得上吧,不過請記得這句話只在日常場合使用,官方場合的英文則不要用這句了!

除此之外,其實不少港式中文都受到英文影響,除了港式英文外,還有港式中文的!

有試過馬拉松嗎?今次主角跑得不夠快,但他又不想放棄…

He was running as hard as he could, but he realised that he was not strong enough to be a good marathon runner. In the distance he could just make out the shapes of the leading runners, getting further ahead every minute. 'You'll have to speed up if you're going to catch them,’ he thought to himself. Phrasal Verbs(片語) 4 - Saturn and Mars

今回,我們來到星球大戰,當中又可看不同的Phrasal Verbs

By the end of the year 2941, the Martian inter-galactic starships had almost completely blockaded the industrial southern hemisphere of Saturn. Saturnine trade was in direct competition with Mars, and the Martian rulers had decided they would stand for it no longer. In despair, the Saturnine Council turned to the Plutonian Master for help, but help arrived in a very different form. A Venusian peaceship, returning from deep space after gathering lost nuclear missiles for safe burial on Earth, landed on the agricultural side of Saturn to stock up with fresh food. This was the breakthrough the Saturnines needed. They announced to the Martians that they were holding the weapons; the Martians called off the blockade and gave up trying to enforce their will over the Saturnines.

今次文章中出現的Phrasal Verbs :
  • stand for (N2,P2) - (Usually Negative) Referee in games will not stand for any illegal play.

一句多義 - Doing nothing is doing something?

生果報於2011年8月8日的報導,就美降評級後首個交易日的報導中,訪問了一名基金經理,他對於後市短期內應否入市中用上一句:「doing nothing is doing something」,而記者則譯作一動不如一靜。

http://hk.apple.nextmedia.com/template/apple/art_main.php?iss_id=20110808&sec_id=4104&subsec_id=11866&art_id=15503198

筆者在網上看到原來不少投資者都有以這句作為投資其中一項大原則。Doing Nothing在他們眼中,大致上是解作持有現金而不購入其他投資產品。

如果單從投資角度來看,這句話的確可以解作一動不如一靜,事實上記者又一點也沒錯,畢竟那是一篇和經濟、投資有關的新聞報導。不過,在其他層面,這句說話同時又有其他意思。大家可以看看這篇關於禪學的文章:

http://zenhabits.net/the-art-of-doing-nothing/

(多閱讀是好事來的 :P)

這篇文章提及”Doing Nothing”的好處,可讓人放鬆心情,不再這麼緊張。意即有時候真的應該甚麼也不做,靜下來休息。文章內還詳細的講述如何可以放鬆得再好一點,當中包括呼吸技巧、坐在甚麼位置等…

在英文當中,不單是一個相同的字,就算是一句相同的句子,在不同地方也會存在不同的意思!

好了,我要去Doing Nothing了!:)

Phrasal Verbs(片語) 3 - Strike

Strike在這裡的意思是罷工或抗議,有時則解作打擊、敲撞的意思。到底罷工是好是壞?
'So I think we should go on strike and show the manager who is really important - the boss or the worker.'
'No, George, you're making a big mistake. It's much better to build up good relations with the managers, even if it does happen slowly.'
'Oh, I'm all for a happy atmosphere. Did I ever say I wasn't?’

'No, but we've got enough money to get by at the moment. I know you want more than the minimum, but you're asking for too much. These are hard times, and we've just got to put up with them."
'I agree that we've got enough money now; but what happens when prices go up again?
文章出現的片語:

  • Go up(!) - Prices or wages go up. In summer the temperature goes up.

  • Put up with(N2,P2) - If you can't get rid of a cold you have to put up with it.
N1 - 動詞與介詞可以分開 / 和物體名詞(Object Noun)或名詞詞組(Noun phrases)同用

Phrasal Verbs(片語) 2 - In The Morning

這一次,大家可以看看Jane和Sarah關於每早起床的對話,去學習一下Phrasal Verb…
Jane: You're not properly awake yet, are you?
Sarah: How do you know?
Jane: Well, look how you've made up your face. And you shirt is done up so that one side is higher than the other.

Sarah: Oh dear. I look awful.
Jane: I'd have a wash and start again, if I were you.
Sarah: It's terrible. I keep on oversleeping. I wake up late nearly everyday, and I have to get up in a hurry....

Jane: I know just what it's like. I never get enough time to myself in the mornings.
Sarah: Time! I don't have time to see to the children' s breakfast, let alone
worry about anything else.
文章中粗體的片語:
  • Make up(N1,N2,P1,!) - You make your face up with cosmetics or make-up. You can also make (yourself) up.
  • Keep on(G)- When you keep on talking you talk repeatedly.
  • Wake up(N1,N2,P1,!) - An alarm clock wakes you up. When you hear it you wake up.
  • Get up(N1,P1,!) - You get up in the morning. You get a baby up.
  • See to(N2,P2) - When a job needs to be done you see to it.
  • Do up(N1,N2,P1) - 見On the Plane
另外,大家也不妨留意Sarah 第一句:"You're not properly awake yet, are you? "

其實Sarah這樣問己經假設Jane的確未訓醒,然後作出反問。句子前半你會使用否定式(not),後半問題部分,你則使用一般問題方法而不會加上not。

如果Sarah假設Jane是訓醒的,則not會在後半,而非前半部分出現。

N1 - 動詞與介詞可以分開 / 和物體名詞(Object Noun)或名詞詞組(Noun phrases)同用

In the aeroplane ]ames’s mother gave the boarding cards to the stewardess, who showed them to their seats. They sat down, and his mother showed him how to do up his seat belt.

’No smoking until we are in the air, please," said a stewardess.
'I'm sorry,’ answered ]ames’s mother. ‘I'll put it out.’

’Are we going to take off now, Mum?’ asked James, eager to be in the sky. ‘My favourite bit is when the plane speeds up and pushes you back into your seat.
