Now that we've bugged your phone
We hear even your dial tone
We hear your every word
You didn't know could be heard
We know all about your moves
We know all about your plans
Yes, I'll get all your votes
This is my second chance

Now that I'm getting scared
What if I get found out
What am I suppose to do?
What am I suppose to do?
What am I suppose to do?

Maybe they've done the same
They're set to wreck my campaign
These narrow-minded fools

It's for the greater good
They'll do all that it takes
To have me be replaced
There's no one else stepping in
No, I'll never let them win

Now that I'm getting scared
What if I get found out
What am I suppose to do?
What am I suppose to do?
What am I suppose to do?

Now that we've bugged your phone
We hear even your dial tone
We hear your every word
You didn't know could be heard
We know all about your moves
We know all about your plans
Yes, I'll get all your votes
This is my second chance

本曲主要講述於選舉戰中,偷聽對手電話的事,大家可以留意以下字詞:
  • Bug - 既可解作蟲,又可解作撰寫程式時所產生的問題,不過這裡則解作竊聽器,作動詞則解作竊聽。
  • Wreck - 破壞,用作名詞時可譯作廢墟,可想以知,這詞所指的嚴重程度有多大。
  • The greater good -這裡是指大眾的利益

For Crying It Loud後...

You kids cool it and stop fighting right now! Not one single day goes by without fighting between the two of you. Can't you be more friendly to each other like Mike and Linda next door?

這位爸爸説:你們不許再打了,馬上給我停下來。沒有一天你們不打架的。你們能不能也像隔壁的Mike和Linda那樣友善點呢?
或者來個妻子發脾氣,老公勸說的例子吧。鄰居把她新買的汽車撞壞,她怒不可遏之時,於是當老公的對她説:

Cool it, honey! I've checked the car -- it's not as serious as you thought. Besides, their insurance company is going to pay for the repair.

這位丈夫説:“別發火,親愛的。我去檢查過那車了,情況並不像你想像的那麼嚴重。而且,他們的保險公司會負擔修理費的。

For crying out loud!!

Cry 解作哭泣或狂呼,相信不用多說。不過,Cry 也可組成不同的俗語,今天我們就和大家介紹Crying it Loud的用法:

For crying out loud :是不耐煩地、或者是厭煩地表示驚訝。我們要舉的例子是一個怒氣沖衝的爸爸在跟他兒子説話:
例(1):For crying out loud, son! When are you going to do what I've told you and clean up your room! I just looked in there again and it's so messy I had to look twice to make sure your bed was still there under all that junk.

2: For crying out loud! Jack took my tennis racket again. How many times have I told him I don't mind letting him use it, but he at least has to ask first in case I need it myself!

我的天呀!Jack又把我的網球拍拿走了。我己跟他説了無數次,我不是介意,但是他至少得問我一聲,萬一我自己要用怎麼辦?
未得別人同意就隨便拿人家東西用的壞習慣可不是美國特有的,筆者在大學就遇過不少內地生是這樣子了。雖然,大多數人都討厭這種沒有禮貌的行為。

聽歌學英文 - Fly me to the moon

Fly me to the moon可算是經典名曲,最初這首歌是1954年由Kaye Ballard錄音,當時是以In Other Words之名推出。後來Portia Nelson也翻唱了這首歌,而「Fly Me to the Moon」這個名字則是Johnny Mathis在1956年推出專輯之時出現的。這首歌被不少歌手翻唱過,當中包括黎明(收錄於《北京站》專輯)、鍾嘉欣(《My Love Story》專輯)、宇多田光、茱莉倫敦(Julie London)等。

今次讓大家聽聽Julie London演繹的版本:

歌詞:
Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On a-Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me

Fill my heart with song
And let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you

Fill my heart with song
Let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, in other words
I love ... you
部分生字 / 詞語組合:
(有否留意大部分生字大家都認識呢?)
  • Worship - 崇拜(指神)
  • Adore - 崇拜(指人) - 當然可以有如歌詞般兩者皆用,但程度就顯得非常誇張了。
  • In other words - 換句話說
  • Long for - 盼望、期待己久

He was running as hard as he could, but he realised that he was not strong enough to be a good marathon runner. In the distance he could just make out the shapes of the leading runners, getting further ahead every minute. 'You'll have to speed up if you're going to catch them,’ he thought to himself. 聽歌學英文 - Feist - Mushaboom

今次是一首很輕快的音樂,不過同樣是來自加拿大 - Feist - Mushaboom。歌曲於2004年以單曲形式推出,"Mushaboom"這個名字則來自加拿大小城。

歌詞:
Helping the kids out of their coats
But wait the babies haven't been born oh
Unpacking the bags and setting up
And planting lilacs and buttercups oh

It may be years until the day
My dreams will match up with my pay

Old dirt road,

knee deep snow
(mushaboom, mushaboom)
Watching the fire as we grow
(mushaboom, mushaboom)

I got a man to stick it out
And make a home from a rented house oh
And we'll collect the moments one by one
I guess that's how the future's done oh

How many acres, how much light
Tucked in the woods and out of sight
Talk to the neighbours and tip my cap
On a little road barely on the map

Phrasal Verbs(片語) 4 - Saturn and Mars

今回,我們來到星球大戰,當中又可看不同的Phrasal Verbs

By the end of the year 2941, the Martian inter-galactic starships had almost completely blockaded the industrial southern hemisphere of Saturn. Saturnine trade was in direct competition with Mars, and the Martian rulers had decided they would stand for it no longer. In despair, the Saturnine Council turned to the Plutonian Master for help, but help arrived in a very different form. A Venusian peaceship, returning from deep space after gathering lost nuclear missiles for safe burial on Earth, landed on the agricultural side of Saturn to stock up with fresh food. This was the breakthrough the Saturnines needed. They announced to the Martians that they were holding the weapons; the Martians called off the blockade and gave up trying to enforce their will over the Saturnines.

今次文章中出現的Phrasal Verbs :
  • stand for (N2,P2) - (Usually Negative) Referee in games will not stand for any illegal play.
  • Turn to (N2,P2) - You turn to someone you want help from.
  • Stock up with (N2,P2) - People stock up tih food if the shops are going to close for a few days
  • Break through (N2,P2) - You break through a barrier of some kind. YOu can speak of a breakthrough e.g. the discovery of penicillin was a breakthrough in science.
  • Call off (N1,N2,P1) - You call off an appointment, if you are unable to get to it and have to cancel it.
  • Give up (N1,N2,P1,G) - You give up if you stop doing it.

一句多義 - Doing nothing is doing something?

生果報於2011年8月8日的報導,就美降評級後首個交易日的報導中,訪問了一名基金經理,他對於後市短期內應否入市中用上一句:「doing nothing is doing something」,而記者則譯作一動不如一靜。

http://hk.apple.nextmedia.com/template/apple/art_main.php?iss_id=20110808&sec_id=4104&subsec_id=11866&art_id=15503198

筆者在網上看到原來不少投資者都有以這句作為投資其中一項大原則。Doing Nothing在他們眼中,大致上是解作持有現金而不購入其他投資產品。

如果單從投資角度來看,這句話的確可以解作一動不如一靜,事實上記者又一點也沒錯,畢竟那是一篇和經濟、投資有關的新聞報導。不過,在其他層面,這句說話同時又有其他意思。大家可以看看這篇關於禪學的文章:

http://zenhabits.net/the-art-of-doing-nothing/

(多閱讀是好事來的 :P)

這篇文章提及”Doing Nothing”的好處,可讓人放鬆心情,不再這麼緊張。意即有時候真的應該甚麼也不做,靜下來休息。文章內還詳細的講述如何可以放鬆得再好一點,當中包括呼吸技巧、坐在甚麼位置等…

在英文當中,不單是一個相同的字,就算是一句相同的句子,在不同地方也會存在不同的意思!

好了,我要去Doing Nothing了!:)

Performance Knows No Colour!

Daniel Powter - Free Loop

還記得小時候總是認為聽英文歌是很困難去聽得出他的歌詞,可是如果你有心去看看歌詞,倒又發現那些英文字詞其實是你學過的,雖然你不一定知道合起來的意思(那麼就請你看看關於Phrasal verbs的教學)…

今期推介加拿大歌手Daniel Powter 於2005年11月所推出的歌曲:Free Loop,歌曲主要是描述他與鋼琴之間的關係。

歌詞:
I'm a little used to calling outside your name
I won't see you tonight, so I can keep from going insane
But I don't know enough, I get some kind of lazy day, hey yeah
I've been fabulous through to find my tattered name
I'll be stewed tomorrow if I don't leave us both the same
But I don't know enough, I get some kind of lazy day, hey yeah

Cause it's hard for me to lose in my life I've found
Only time will tell and I will figure out
That we can baby, we can do the one night stand, yeah
And It's hard for me to lose in my life I've found
Outside your skin, right near the fire
That we can baby we can change and feel alright

I'm a little used to wandering outside the rain
You could leave me tomorrow if it suits you just the same
But I don't know enough, I need sun when it leaves the day, hey yeah

Cause it's hard for me to lose in my life I've found
Only time will tell and I will figure out
That we can baby, we can do the one night stand, yeah
And It's hard for me to lose in my life I've found
Outside your skin, right near the fire
That we can baby we can change and feel alright
部分生字 / 詞語組合:
  • Insane - 發瘋,歌詞中"keep from going insane"也可以解說成一直發瘋
  • Stew(stewed) - 煩惱,於煮食中也解作燉、燜
  • One night stand - 一夜情
  • Figure out - 找出
  • Wander - 流浪、漫步、遊蕩,特別是指無目的

Phrasal Verbs(片語) 3 - Strike

Strike在這裡的意思是罷工或抗議,有時則解作打擊、敲撞的意思。到底罷工是好是壞?
'So I think we should go on strike and show the manager who is really important - the boss or the worker.'
'No, George, you're making a big mistake. It's much better to build up good relations with the managers, even if it does happen slowly.'
'Oh, I'm all for a happy atmosphere. Did I ever say I wasn't?’

'No, but we've got enough money to get by at the moment. I know you want more than the minimum, but you're asking for too much. These are hard times, and we've just got to put up with them."
'I agree that we've got enough money now; but what happens when prices go up again?

Phrasal Verbs(片語) 2 - In The Morning

這一次,大家可以看看Jane和Sarah關於每早起床的對話,去學習一下Phrasal Verb…
Jane: You're not properly awake yet, are you?
Sarah: How do you know?
Jane: Well, look how you've made up your face. And you shirt is done up so that one side is higher than the other.

Sarah: Oh dear. I look awful.
Jane: I'd have a wash and start again, if I were you.
Sarah: It's terrible. I keep on oversleeping. I wake up late nearly everyday, and I have to get up in a hurry....

Jane: I know just what it's like. I never get enough time to myself in the mornings.
Sarah: Time! I don't have time to see to the children' s breakfast, let alone
worry about anything else.
文章中粗體的片語:
  • Make up(N1,N2,P1,!) - You make your face up with cosmetics or make-up. You can also make (yourself) up.
  • Keep on(G)- When you keep on talking you talk repeatedly.
  • Wake up(N1,N2,P1,!) - An alarm clock wakes you up. When you hear it you wake up.
  • Get up(N1,P1,!) - You get up in the morning. You get a baby up.
  • See to(N2,P2) - When a job needs to be done you see to it.
  • Do up(N1,N2,P1) - 見On the Plane
另外,大家也不妨留意Sarah 第一句:"You're not properly awake yet, are you? "

Phrasal Verbs(片語) 1 - On the Plane

相信大家對Phrasal Verb並不陌生,只是verb和preposition要如何配搭,有時的確令人投降,這一次Learnin'2pi 為大家分享一點關於Phrasal Verb…
In the aeroplane ]ames’s mother gave the boarding cards to the stewardess, who showed them to their seats. They sat down, and his mother showed him how to do up his seat belt.

’Sit still, and don't get up until I say you can,’ she said, lighting a cigarette.
’No smoking until we are in the air, please," said a stewardess.
'I'm sorry,’ answered ]ames’s mother. ‘I'll put it out.’

’Are we going to take off now, Mum?’ asked James, eager to be in the sky. ‘My favourite bit is when the plane speeds up and pushes you back into your seat.

很多時候同學也許都會願意花點時間去記不同的片語組合,不過如果只是盲目牢記,則恐怕事倍功半。所以,今次我們使用了一篇短文並挑選部分Phrasal Verb,去讓大家從文章中學習,從前文後理中推敲,加深對用法的了解。

今次文章中出現的Phrasal Verbs :
